To celebrate Black History Month, Kroger invites Michigan students to enter its 10th annual “I Can Make History contest. Open to all Michigan students in grades 4 through 12, students may enter original work in ART, ESSAY, MUSIC or POETRY. Kroger will award more than $80,000 in prizes to winners of the 2017 contest.

All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

Thank you for helping Kroger celebrate Black History Month and the many African Americans who have significantly contributed to our country in the past and the countless others who are working to better our communities today.

ENTER YOUR ORIGINAL WORK IN ART, ESSAY, MUSIC OR POETRY and you could win a scholarship, tablet or family membership package.

  • Art Submission Guidelines

    Artwork, highlighting one of the contest themes, must be two-dimensional: paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.), drawings (colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal), collages, mixed media, computer-generated art or photographs. Must be accompanied by a 75-word essay.

  • Essay Submission Guidelines

    Essay entries must contain 300 to 500 words highlighting one of the contest themes, typed on 8.5” x 11” paper, single-sided, double-spaced and include the student’s name, school, grade level and word count on the title page. Handwritten essays will not be judged.

  • Music Submission Guidelines

    Music entry must not exceed four (4) minutes in length, submitted on a USB Flash Drive as an MP4 or MP3 file. Music submissions submitted without lyrics must include a typed, 75-word essay explaining or describing how their music relates to one of the highlighted contest themes. Handwritten lyrics and/or essays will not be judged.

  • Poetry Submission Guidelines

    Poetry entries must be no longer than 30 lines highlighting one of the contest themes, typed on 8.5” x 11” paper, single-sided. Handwritten poems will not be judged.
